In the early 1940s, Saf-T-Pops were developed by Carl W. Spohr of Chicago and Robert F. Bracke of Arlington Heights, Illinois. Curtiss Candy Company acquired the rights to Saf-T-Pops in the late 1940s and at this time Curtiss was a division of Standard Brands, who also created the Baby Ruth candy bar. The idea of safety lollipops for toddlers with a flexible fiber loop handle was trademarked April 7, 1942. In 1978, Spangler Candy Company acquired the Saf-T-Pop trademark and machinery from Curtiss Candy Company and began production in 1979.
Saf-T-Pops come in Regular and Swirl varieties available for consumers in bags or boxes, or businesses in bulk to give away to customers in appreciation for their business. In 2011, Spangler started offering Customized Saf-T-Pops where wrappers can be personalized with a printed label for any occasion, organization, or business.
